Setting:

The setting of Aqua is without a doubt the highlight of this contemporary venue. Ultra stylish red ambient decor with floor-to-ceiling windows allows for a spectacular view of the harbor and skyline.

Food:

With a menu as adventurous as the décor, Aqua is a must for any visitor to Hong Kong. Offering both Italian and Japanese cuisine split into two contrasting sections on the menu, you are truly spoilt for choice. The delicate flavors of the warm mushroom and lobster salad with arugula and lemon dressing are a delight to start. Follow this with the more unusual but superb Neapolitan squid ink spaghetti with ‘crazy water,’ sea urchin and cherry tomato. The perfectly cooked Victorian lamb is dusted with cumin and fennel seeds and accompanied by smokey eggplant and tomato. Portions are generous and beautifully executed and if you are not tempted by the Italian menu, the Japanese section has a mouth-watering array of sushi and sashimi. Specialties include Taraba crab tempura with crab roe miso and smoked eggplant wrapped in tender paper-thin grilled beef fillet. Finish with the Aqua signature tiramisu with espresso and Kahlua liqueur.

Wine:

An unusually large selection of wines by the glass. Bottles range from roughly $400–$2,500. An exciting cocktail menu and extensive range of Saki and Grappa is also available.

7

Service:

Staff are fast and efficient, but don’t expect any smiles and the service is certainly second place to the view.

Price:

Our three-course meal for two was $1,350, without wine. If you order sensibly, you could dine here for around $700 per head.

In all of my many visits to Aqua I've never failed to secure a table with a good view from which to watch the harbour lights whilst guzzling on fine wine and mouth watering sashimi. It remains my favourite place to take our guess whenever they visit us in HK.

However, if you book an early slot it can on occasion feel like you are on the conveyor belt of life - pause or hesitate with your menu selection or between courses and a waiter/waitress will be at your side to chivvy you along. Just make sure you book an early table and go to the bar upstairs first!

Pros: The harbour view and fabulous soft shell crab sushi roll.

Cons: The conveyor belt like service if you book an early table.

Great when you're in the mood for some glamour and don't mind emptying your wallet in the process. Can be a bit baffling wih the Italian/Japanese menu - but any opportunity to eat sashimi for my appetiser and move on to pasta or prime beef steak works for me! Make sure you spend at least half an hour in the bar before and/or after your meal and, gents, check out the loos!

Pros: Great food; amazing view; buzzing atmosphere; attentive service.

Cons: Hefty price tag; Inconsistent portion size; So dark you need to tread really carefully which is tricky in heels!

I never quite trust a kitchen serving several different types of cuisine and every time I got to Aqua, I always have a good experience but I can't help coming away feeling that they would be better off focusing on one type of cuisine and really nailing it with some incredible dishes rather than doing both Japanese and Italian cuisine that is nice (especially paired with the view) but not amazing or particularly inventive.

Pros: Sorry to be boring... but the view!

Cons: The menu lacks focus or wow-factor

WOW!

Aqua is without a doubt one of the most jaw-droppingly beautiful venues I have ever seen! I discovered it about three months ago and have been taking every visitor I have to Hong Kong there since. Both the bar and the restaurant are fully encased in glass and the bright lights of the island skyline form the most incredibly chic backdrop. You certainly pay for the priviledge of the best view in Hong Kong, but the bill is generally not as scary as somewhere like Spoon or Amber. However, that said, the food and service aren't quite five-star hotel standard either, they Italian menu is good and the staff are friendly enough but neither will blow you're socks off as much as the view!

Pros: You HAVE to see this view!

Cons: Service staff can be a bit slow at busy periods
