Setting:

Amber is the epitome of understated chic, with cool, clean decor, modern design and an eye-catching centre piece hanging from the ceiling.

9

Food:

The food is ultra modern, both in construction and presentation, mirroring the restaurant’s physical design. The seven-course tasting menu can be combined with a five-glass wine pairing, which is a great way to make most of your Amber experience. Every item is exquisitely presented, but the standout dishes include the duck fois gras with smoked fresh water eel, an indulgent appetiser not to be missed and the blue fin tuna, which is cubed, seared and glazed with maple syrup reduction. The John Dory with baby calamari stuffed with melted aubergine are bursting with flavour and the New Zealand langoustines are amazingly tender and fresh; however, the accompanying sweet and sour dressing is slightly overpowering. The Wagyu beef is excellent and comes with a delicate Charlotte potato mousseline (creamy mashed potatoes). The cheese platter offers five different cheeses, all very tasty, and the desserts will leave you breathless.

9

Wine:

The wine list is broad, as you would expect, and the wine pairing is well chosen.

10

Service:

The service is truly excellent and the waiters are attentive and intimately aware of the nuances in the preparation of the food.

Price:

Proof that you get what you pay for, dinner for two, excluding drinks, will set you back over $2,000.

Signature dishes:

  • Duck foie gras with eel
  • Blue fin tuna with crispy chicken skin
  • Margaret River Wagyu

I ate in the private dining room, which offered a nice and relaxing ambience, albeit a little bit cramped. I had high expectations for the food, which unfortunately did not deliver. The food, although fresh, was a bit unimaginative, and the portions were so tiny that all of us devoured three bread baskets each, and left still feeling hungry - and these were size 2 ladies.

Amber does seriously good food and the setting is fantastic. It's modern but still romantic and you just can't beat the service or sense of splendor that you get walking into the Mandarin. However, be warned, it's definiately a special occaision restaurant and you can sometimes get stung on the bill, particularly with annoying silly extras like wildly over-priced bottled water.

Pros: Romantic setting and fantastic food

Cons: Painful on the wallet!
