Nobu on a Shoestring

Dear Editor,

I love Japanese food and am a big fan of Nobu but resent the enormous price tag that such restaurants command. Is there anywhere else you can recommend for modern Japanese cuisine, which won't cause my credit card to start screaming... or is that just me?

Jamie

Dear Jamie,

First of all, Nobu is expensive but in our opinion, well worth the splurge on a special occaision. If you don’t go crazy with the wine, you can get a good meal for around $1,000 to $1,500 per head. Now I’m not saying that’s eating on a shoestring but it’s not completely unreasonable given the fact the namesake is such a genius in the kitchen and you could easily end up spending that on another average night out drinking. If you're really counting your pennies, why not go to Nobu for lunch? The bento boxes start at around $300 and are an incredibly good value way to taste the cuisine. Alternatively, diversify and check out Nadaman for the awesome teppanyaki grill (a meal usually comes to around $800 per person with wine) or head upstairs in Zuma and sit in the bar area where you can order snacks and tid bits as you enjoy cocktails.
