Setting:

A modern and chic restaurant with an impressive wine cave at the entrance and jaw-dropping views of the harbor. Decor is functional and minimalist and an open kitchen allows diners to watch the chefs hard at work.

Food:

Alain Ducasse is currently the only chef to hold three Michelin stars in three different countries, so it is with huge expectations that you approach the cuisine at his signature restaurant in Hong Kong. Most of the dishes fulfill expectations but the cuisine is not particularly ground-breaking. The menu is split into two sections: original and classic touch. The original menu offers a more innovative approach to French classics such as steamed duck foie gras. The classic touch section offers more standard French favourites, such as maine lobster with coral sauce and vegetable tartar. Both starters are perfectlyprepared with excellent quality ingredients and elegant seasoning. For mains, the red tuna is pan-seared creating a crumbly outer crust bursting with sesame flavours encasing the buttery fish and the accompanying satay sauce. The Wagyu beef tenderloin with truffle sauce is Ducasse-style decadence at its finest. The marbled beef is rich with a thick outer crust, which is perfectly complimented by the aromatic truffles. For dessert, do not miss the chocolate praline profiteroles, which ooze molten indulgence.

Wine:

An incredible selection of wine, which has to be one of the most impressive in Hong Kong. The sommelier has near encyclopedic knowledge.

Service:

Service is faultless with relaxed but perfectly professional staff on hand but not intrusive.

Price:

Our three-course meal for two, without wine, was $1,900.

I was quite disappointed with this restaurant. Although the reviews seemed to rave about the luxury and status of this place, it seemed to fall quite flat on my scale.

Ambience - The music playing was a techno mix. Is this really appropriate for fine dining? I think there are indeed better choices that would have enhanced our dining experience rather than be annoyed by the continuous beat of hard techno. Save it for the clubs.

Interior - For it's location, price and reputation, you would expect some type of high-end interior. The lighting, a key factor, was way too bright.

Food - Coming from Montreal where high-end French food is abundant, we were expecting something of the same level but we were disappointed. We had the eight-course degustation menu, which normally, should be a great experience of tastes and textures. However, the food lacked innovation in my opinion. The ingredients used were nothing special and the only semi interesting dish was the sea bass with pistachio. Each sauce was the same with no differentiation and all were very buttery. (That can be good but with each course it's a little overwhelming).

Service - I was expecting impeccable customer service like something you would get at Petrus but that is not evident at Spoon. When it comes to the menu, waiters are not that knowledgeable nor do they make you feel that you are being served by a professional.

I understand that the name comes from the spoons on the ceiling but where is the harmony of this restaurant? From the food, service, interior and name there is nothing that brings all these important elements together.

My boyfriend took me here as a surprise on my birthday and we had a lovely evening.

I had the lamb curry - an unusual choice for me - the lamb was cooked to perfection and melted in my mouth and the rice and dried fruit that accompanied it added a sweet crunch to the tender lamb and the savoury sauce. My boyfriend had pork. He said it was the best piece of pork he had ever eaten (so pretty good I would imagine)!

We walked our food off along Avenue of the Stars. The amazing view and fresh (ish) sea air was a perfect way to finish a wonderful meal.

Pros: Amazing views, funky decor, excellent service

Cons: Expensive and very high class (I never felt completely comfortable there)
